New School Year, New Changes, New Opportunities
Although most people would say the year is half over, for us it's just the beginning. The new school year starts tomorrow, and also new legislation that will affect our industry greatly.
Of course, the new Gainful Employment legislation is the big news. Although the version passed is highly preferable to the original proposal, it remains to be seen exactly how and how much it will affect our industry.
The Association of Private Sector Colleges and Universities (APSCU) issued this statement regarding the new regulation:
"We remain very concerned that the gainful employment regulation, while reflecting the fact that the Department has listened to the sector and made changes to its initial proposal, is still using the same ill-advised metric approach to this matter and is clearly outside of its statutory authority. Notwithstanding the changes, the real question is how the regulation will impact students, particularly non-traditional students served by our institutions."
While gainful employment is a huge concern, let's not lose sight of the big picture as we begin the new school year - the real reason we're in this industry - to change lives. For every adversity, we also have an opportunity to make a difference in the life of a student. As we approach Independence Day, remember all the students you have helped reach their own "independence day" through a better education.
